DEMISE OF PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH

04/13/2021
We too would like to express our sadness at the news of the death of HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip was patron of the Outward Bound Trust in the United Kingdom from 1953 until his retirement in 2019, after 65 years of involvement with the charity. Over the decades, the Duke of Edinburgh extended his patronage to the growing Outward Bound movement that followed the founding of the first school in Aberdovey, Wales, in 1941. His Royal Highness became patron of Outward Bound International, the worldwide licensing and membership organization, in 1997. From 1934 to 1939 Prince Philip attended Gordonstoun boarding school in Scotland, where Kurt Hahn was founder and principal. Hahn, who was reportedly one of the biggest influences on the life of the young Prince Philip, later founded Outward Bound with shipping industrialist Lawrence Holt. It was the Duke of Edinburgh’s personal experience with Hahn’s educational philosophies that enabled him to develop an early affinity for Outward Bound and then to support the organization’s worldwide growth through his unwavering personal commitment to its mission. Prince Philip leaves behind a lasting legacy defined by his service and commitment to the ideals and philosophy of the Outward Bound movement, which he was instrumental in advancing during his time as patron in over 30 countries on six continents. We at Outward Bound are deeply grateful to His Royal Highness for his many contributions and achievements and send our sincere condolences to all members of the Royal Family and especially Queen Elizabeth. We will remember him fondly and thank him for his decades of dedication!
